This study investigates the platform-mediated dynamics of emotional asymmetry between Weibo celebrities and the public during online public events. Moving beyond the linear model of affective influence, we conceptualize emotional asymmetry as a systematic disconnect between the expressed effect of influencers and the aggregated emotional response of the public, a process actively shaped by platform architectures. Employing a paired sentiment analysis approach, we examined 154 high-engagement posts from 30 top-tier celebrities and their 19,640 replies using the BosonNLP toolkit in Python. Findings reveal that celebrity discourse is predominantly negative (69.5%) and strategically employs multimodal expression, hashtag linkage, identity appeals, and rhetorical reinforcement to mobilize sentiment. Crucially, public response exhibits significant asymmetry: negative posts often trigger emotional compensation (56.6% positive replies), while positive posts can induce cognitive dissonance (25.07% mild-negative replies). This asymmetry is not merely psychological but is platformed, mediated by Weibo’s algorithmic visibility logic which prioritizes certain affective expressions. The study contributes to digital public sphere theory by foregrounding the recursive, platform-driven nature of emotional mobilization, offering critical insights for platform governance and affective literacy in an era of algorithmically curated sentiment.
